Shenandoah National Park


Shenandoah National Park Day 3 -- 3 September 2002 The day started with a tour of President Hoover's getaway retreat in Shenandoah. He purchased the land and built the buildings out of his own money, and donated it to the White House as an official Presidential Retreat. No other President used it. Most of the buildings are gone, but the Park Service is rebuilding and maintining the three remaining buildings.

		The Hoovers were very strict about not disturbing nature. The buildings do not have foundations in the ground; they sit on the rocks. Full picture [83 KB]

		We thought that this was an "outdoor living room" setting, similar to the outdoor fireplace. But this was actually added years later when the Boy Scouts had a long-term lease on the site. Full picture [126 KB]
